An allergy is where the body has a violent reaction to some substance that enters the body or comes into prolonged contact with the body. There are a variety of different substances that are reported to cause allergic reactions and these are known as allergens. These allergens are perceived by the immune system in your body as being a threat to the body. This leads the immune system to react to these substances with hostility and it is these reactions that are termed an allergy attack. The severity of the attack and the frequency of allergy attacks are dependent on the general level of sensitivity of the immune system.
There are different groups of allergens, among them are three large groups, but there are many other groups that exist including the group that includes pet allergies. These groups of allergens are those substances that cause food allergies, those substances that cause skin allergies and insect bits that cause allergies. Any of these three groups has constituents that can cause anaphylaxis or cause a person to go into anaphylactic shock if the sufferer is susceptible enough. A person can become increasingly allergic to a substance, especially a food allergen, if they continue to be exposed to it and take no medication and what was once a mild allergy can become a severe allergy, with the increased potential for a fatal experience.
Skin allergies can be caused by a variety of things, mainly materials that tend to be in constant contact with the body. This can include allergic reactions to latex or nylon as well as other materials, but these tend to be limited to synthetic or unnatural fibers and fabrics. This can also include metal accessories such as belt buckles and jewelry, but also it is normally applicable to metals that are not pure, such as nickel. Skin allergies tend to manifest as red blotches and marks on the skin and swelling in the immediate area around the item caused the reaction. Depending on the severity and location of the reaction removing the item and washing the area thoroughly can help to greatly decrease the effects of the allergens on the skin for many mild allergic reactions.
Food allergens are a different story entirely as they are far more likely than skin allergies to produce an attack threat leads to anaphylactic shock in the sufferer. There are certain food groups of food that are more likely to cause an allergic reaction within the body than others, while there are some items of food that almost cannot provoke an allergic reaction. The food groups that have a higher rate of causing allergic reactions include shell fish and dairy products. Once a person becomes aware of what is the root cause of their allergy then they can take steps to substitute it out of their diet and make sure that they scrutinize the labeling of all store bought products that could be a risk to consume.
Once consumed there is very little that can be done to prevent the reaction, but a person with a food allergy should make sure to keep their allergy medication on them at all time to ensure that the correct steps can be taken in an emergency. This is however true of all people who suffer allergic reactions from exposure to any type of allergens, not just those who suffer from allergic reactions brought on by food related allergens. It is especially true for those people who suffer from food related allergies and insect bite related allergies.
The unpredictable nature of allergic reactions to insect bites makes this allergy one the most concerning since there is very little that one can do to decrease exposure to the source. This is a marked difference to the dust mite allergies for which there are many allergy control products available. These products can decrease the occurrence of the allergens inside, particularly within rooms in the home. These products can help to decrease the negative effects that they allergens can have on a person’s life.
